Taking Captive Every Thought

So I know sometimes this is hard to do. There’s just so much evil around that we’re exposed to- things we hear, we see… Sometimes stupid or evil thoughts just pop into our heads and it’s not like we tried to think it.

When things pop into your head, don’t freak out like.. Did I really just think that?! There is a part in Pilgrim’s Progress where Christian is going through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, and a devil creeps up to him and whispers blasphemies in his ear. Christian goes right to scripture.

Like he did at Christian, Satan is trying to put evil ideas into your head- it is not necessarily something you are actually considering. This is where “Taking captive every thought to the obedience of Christ” comes into play. It is absolutely important that we not allow evil thoughts to linger. A good way I’ve found is to repeat verses to myself that I’ve learned. The important thing is to get rid of the thought as soon as possible, otherwise we are allowing sin to linger in us.

Well, there you are! I hope this post encourages you and that you make great bounds in taking captive every thought, for that is truly a lot of what our faith is!

  1. Wonderful post, Ruth! Very wise words. Thank you for the encouragement!! So true….we must not allow evil thoughts to linger. The more we feed it, the stronger the temptation grows. I’ve also found that when these thoughts and temptations come to mind, it’s important that we turn our gaze away from them and fix our eyes on Christ. If we’re so intensely focused on Christ, we can easier neglect that temptation because we’re not staring straight at it. Again, wonderful post!
