Life is both beautiful and hard. A lot of times, we are told to live life to the fullest. And it’s true, and that is what we should be doing, after all. But we shouldn’t be living life to the fullest….for just ourselves. Otherwise, what’s the point? We will eventually come to the end of the day, or to the end of our lives, and realize that all of our ambitions and living for ourselves never leaves us fulfilled.
Sometimes the death of a loved one brings us to the reality that all life eventually ends. Sometimes we can get all caught up in our everyday lives, going through the motions, and we forget that life isn’t just about us. There’s movies, quotes and books put out every single year about “the meaning of life” and what we can do to succeed and get the most out of life. There are hundreds of lists of “100 things you should do before you die.” People have been trying to find an “answer” for so many years. YouTube videos, movies and inspirational quotes are usually what people go to. There are so many quotes that say something like “don’t live with regrets, hating yourself, dieting, running after people who don’t see you…do what feels good, make yourself proud.”
Really? Is that how we are called to live our lives? If we want to find true fulfillment and most importantly if we want to glorify Christ, we must look into His word to see how He wants us to live…our lives to the fullest. There’s nothing wrong with not running after people who won’t love you right, or letting go of regrets. But when it is to do “what makes you happy”, it will never make you happy “enough”. Joy and happiness are found in Christ, and we when base our joy on circumstances, we will find ourselves often heartbroken and unjoyful. 1 Corinthians 10:31, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”I think we can live for the glory of God because of what He has done for us.A lot of times we forget what Christ truly did for us, and then it’s harder to live for Him.Philippians 2:6-8 says, “Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” So because of what Christ did for us on the cross, we can do all to the glory of Him.That is what our life should be about: growing in the knowledge of Christ through His word, and doing what He wants us to do. Of course, it’s not that we can’t have fun shopping with friends, going to waterparks, or accomplishing many bucket list items before we die. Those are really good things, and we shouldn’t waste our life away…but we also shouldn’t waste it completely on ourselves. Ultimately our main goal for life should be to reflect God and what we wants us to do.
